Your Lease Says You Need Insurance. You Need It By When?
Shield wraps your commercial space in the exact coverage your landlord requires — liability limits, equipment riders, and a certificate of insurance you can email, print, or fax before the deadline.
"What if my landlord requires $1M in liability?"
Most commercial leases specify a minimum liability limit — typically $500K or $1M. Shield's standard policy starts at $1M general liability, which satisfies the requirements in over 94% of the leases we've seen. If your lease requires $2M, we can umbrella that in the same sitting.
Your landlord also typically needs to be listed as an "additional insured" on your policy — meaning if someone trips in your salon and sues your building, your insurance covers your landlord's exposure too. Shield handles this automatically. The certificate we issue includes their name, your address, and the policy effective date.
General liability covers bodily injury and property damage claims made against your business by third parties. In plain terms:
- → A client slips on a wet floor in your salon and breaks their wrist
- → You accidentally damage a neighboring tenant's inventory
- → A customer claims a product you used caused an allergic reaction
It does not cover your own injuries, your employees' injuries (that's workers' comp), or intentional acts.
"Does this cover my equipment or just the walls?"
The walls are your landlord's problem. Your equipment — the $4,200 salon chair, the commercial mixer, the photography lighting rig, the chest freezer in the commissary — that's yours to protect, and most leases don't cover it at all.
Shield's business personal property rider covers your tools, inventory, and equipment against theft, fire, and certain water damage. You pick the coverage limit — most small spaces land between $8,000 and $25,000, which adds roughly $6–14/mo to your premium.
Anything you own and use primarily for your business, located at or near your insured address:
- → Tools and equipment (scissors, mixers, cameras)
- → Furniture and fixtures you own
- → Inventory and stock
- → Computers and tablets used for your business
Items that belong to clients or that you're temporarily holding are covered under a separate "bailee" endorsement — ask us about it during the quote flow.
"Can I get proof of insurance tonight?"
Yes. If you complete your quote before midnight, your Certificate of Insurance (COI) is issued the same evening. Most clients finish in under 8 minutes from landing on the quote page to having a PDF in their inbox.
The COI includes your landlord or commissary kitchen as the certificate holder, your policy number, effective date, and the exact liability limits your lease specifies. You can email it, download it, or — yes — we can fax it. The fax number field is right there in the quote flow.
During checkout, you'll see a field for "Certificate Holder Fax Number." Enter it there, and we transmit the COI directly after binding — typically within 2 minutes of policy issuance.
We also send you a confirmation email with the transmission receipt so you have proof it was sent.
